COLUMBIA Arvest Dewey Blankenship, 81, of Hodgenville, formerly of Adair County, a retired lumber mill worker, husband of Lena Noted Army bugler Henry Swift dies Henry L. "Sarge" Swift, a retired Army sergeant whose talent as a bugler was recognized by royalty and a U.S. president, died yesterday at the Veterans Administration Medical Center off Cooper Drive.

He was 86. Swift, whose Army career spanned nearly 35 years, was chosen bugler escort for President Calvin Coolidge's visit to the state game lodge at Custer Park, S.D., after he won a contest among buglers from nine Army camps, according to a 1976 Lexington Herald article. Coolidge wrote Swift a letter of commendation for his performance. Swift also was assigned as escort to Queen Marie of Romania when she toured the United States in 1924-25. She was so impressed that she presented him with a silver bugle engraved with "Queen Marie of Rumania 1925," according to the article.

One of his most unusual experiences as a bugler came in 1935, when he was lowered 150 feet on a tiny platform down the face of a 250-foot cliff to sound taps at the unveiling of the George Washington monument at Mount Rushmore, S.D. Swift, the son of an Army chief warrant officer who had 33 years in the service, grew up in Army camps. By 10, he was considered the best bugler at Fort McIntosh, Texas. He joined the Army in 1919. and served in France just after World War I ended, then he returned the United States on assignment to the Fourth Cavalry as a bugler.

In the 1930s, Swift served as President Dwight D. Eisenhower's orderly when Eisenhower was a captain at Fort Meyer, Va. Swift met Eisenhower again when Eisenhower was a general inspecting the Third Army at Liverpool, England, before the Normandy invasion. When Eisenhower came to Lexington seeking re-election as president in 1956, Swift went to see him. Eisenhower personally ordered him admitted after Swift explained to White House aides that the president had asked him 12 years earlier to look him up after the war.

Not all of Swift's military days were spent playing the bugle. A member of the Third Cavalry during World War II, he was awarded the Bronze Star, Silver Star and French Croix de Guerre for actions during that war. His Silver Star citation was for his actions as commander of an armored car on Aug. 27, 1944. In it, he charged an enemy gun emplacement and bore the brunt of a counterattack, according to a newspaper article.

Swift, who was born i in Laredo, Texas, moved to Lexington after his military career ended because his son was a student at the University of Kentucky. But the elder Swift was not idle after the move. He worked as a custodian at several Lexington schools, including Beaumont and Jessie Clark junior high schools, and at Gardenside Christian Church. "His way with young people bordered on the unbelievable," former Beaumont assistant principal J.M. Nickell recalled in an interview for the 1976 article.

"Youngsters who showed little or no respect for authority, public property or their country became his special projects. "He would give them a stern lecture one minute and laugh with them the next. I never saw a student, given a chance to know him, who didn't respect and admire him." Swift is survived by his wife, Stella M. Swift; a daughter, Betty Johnson of Holt, a son, Tommy Swift of Holt, a stepson, William D. Bailey of Lexington; three sisters; and a number of grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, step grandchildren and step great Services will be at 11:30 a.m.

Monday at W.R. Milward Mortuary Southland. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
