The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Cognitive Neuropsychology around the country.
What We Do
A neuropsychologist studies how brain disease, brain injuries, mental health conditions, and developmental disorders impact the way people behave and think. Meanwhile, cognitive neuropsychologist will focus on cognition, which has to do with mental abilities like memory, perception, attention, learning, thinking, processing of language, belief formation, and reasoning. They perform various tests in people who are believed or known to have a brain condition in order to determine how this has impacted on their cognition. They also use the results for determining treatment.
Work Environment
Cognitive neuropsychologists work on studying the biology of the brain itself, and its neurotransmissions. As a result, these psychologists work mainly in clinical settings, including hospitals and specialized clinics. They may also work in settings that focus on specific brain injuries and illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease.
How to Become a Cognitive Neuropsychology
To become a cognitive neuropsychologist, you must first complete a bachelor’s degree. While this doesn’t have to be in psychology, it is beneficial as this provides the foundation you need for further study. Once graduated, you must complete a master’s degree in neuropsychology. Finally, you will have to complete a doctorate degree, which is either the research based Ph.D., or the clinical practice based Psy.D. The latter is the most common for neuropsychologists, although some do work in research. Clearly, the path towards becoming a cognitive neuropsychologist is a very long one, not in the least because most also have to complete an internship as well as several years of supervised work experience. As a result of this, those who do complete the entire journey are truly dedicated to and passionate about the profession.
Training & Certification Requirements
Each state has its own individual requirements for licensing and certification. Generally, a doctorate degree is required in order for someone to be able to work in this field. Additionally, further licenses and certifications can be obtained through the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology. Obtaining this is always a good idea, even if there is no legal requirement. This is because it demonstrates a commitment to the profession as a whole. To be able to get a licensure or certification examination, you must hold a doctorate degree first.
